THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO RELIGION

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is a comedic science fiction pop culture icon that was created by Douglas Adams in the nineteen-seventies. This piece of work has been produced in multiple mediums starting with a radio show, books, movies, and other outlets. For my website project I will be focusing mostly on the first book “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and the 2005 movie, however, I will be referencing all mediums throughout.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is widely view through religion eyes, and criticized for, essentially, criticizing religion. Douglas Adams has been very outspoken about how he claims to be a “radical atheist”, and while God is spoken about in the series, it does not have a religious feel to the work. Adams has been quoted saying how fascinated he is with religion, so I will be exploring how this has affected his writing.

Themes such as the creation of the world and the answer to the universe are commonly brought up, exploring the ideas of God within this work and the icon of the number 42 are important when anaylzing religion.
